World of Warcraft Wrath of the Lich King, the latest expansion pack from Blizzard, brings with it a multitude of changes (as expansion packs generally do...). Jewelcrafting is one of the professions that is affected by these changes.
Burning Crusade saw the introduction of jewelcrafting, bringing with it much more depth to weapons and armor and creating an extremely profitable profession for those that could afford to do it.
Epic
With the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, players will be treated to some nice changes and additions to their profession that will make it possible to earn more gold, once they've maxed out their Jewelcrafting, than they could have previously.
As with some of the other 'upgraded' professions, while it may not necessarily be a good reason to start Jewelcrafting for the first time, it may well be a good reason for existing Jewelcrafters to keep going with it on their way to 450.
On top of this, players will also be able to acquire Jewelcrafting tokens for completing daily quests, with which they will be able to buy things like raw gems and new designs. Dragon's Eye Gems can also be obtained with these jewelcrafting tokens, from which new self-only gems can be crafted. These self-only gems will include the Solid Dragon's Eye (with 41 Stamina) and the Runed Dragon's Eye (with a 32 Spell Power boost).
As if that isn't enough, Jewelcrafters will also be rewarded with a new ability 'Gem Perfection', which will be available after completing the quest of the same name. Upon acquiring this new ability, jewelcrafters get a chance to produce a perfect gem when crafting uncommon gems. These 'perfect gems' will have slightly better stats than uncommon gems. Whether the same effect can be achieved with rare and epic gems remains to be seen, so the usefulness of the skill will only be established with time (and gameplay). That said, there are new epic jewelry designs that will prove to be incredibly valuable in the long run.
Outside of the 'standard' jewelcrafting options, some other, peculiar, items have been added, such as the Focusing Lens, which will allow players to focus a multi-colored beam on a target with 40 charges - almost certainly a handy piece of kit for confusing pickup raids.
Historically a decent source of gold, Jewelcrafting looks as if it will remain a solid profession for the foreseeable future, with the above (and any other) additions Wrath of the Lich King brings with it.
